MAYOR'S VISIT

On the 27th of November the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Hazel Stephenson, our patron, visited the studio of Tyne Sound News.

She met the volunteers from team B and our chairman Doug Walker. She also recorded a special message for our listeners. This will be included on the final Newcastle Talking News recording of the year posted on the 19th of December.

Everyone at Tyne Sound News would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

The first recording of 2017 will be Newcastle Talking News on January 8th.

SIGHT SERVICES EXHIBITION

We were at the annual sight services exhibition at St James Park in Newcastle upon Tyne on Wednesday 7th August.

It was well attended and some of our listeners said hello as they walked around. We only added one new listener, but several people took away leaflets and may be in touch in the future to receive our recordings.

Our thanks go to the volunteers who looked after the stand during the day.

INTERNET RADIO

We are pleased to announce that our recordings are now available to listen to via internet radio.

They can be found if you own a British Wireless for the Blind Sonata device.

TESCO COLLECTION

We held a collection at Tesco Kingston Park on Friday 14th August and thanks to the generous shoppers we raised £390, slightly down on last year, but we didn't have a guide dog, which always helps towards donations.

We would like to thank all the volunteers who held the collecting boxes and special thanks to Gill Carr for orgainising the event for us.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This year was a very special occasion for us, we celebrated forty years of producing audio recordings for the visually impaired. To mark this we held our annual general meeting at Mea House in Newcastle.

Forty seven volunteers and listeners attended. It commenced at 1pm with a lovely buffet, a chance for everyone to have a chat before the formal meeting at 2pm.

Doug Walker, chairman and Angela Hughes, treasurer,  gave their reports.

We were then entertained by John Grundy who agreed to give a talk about local history, this was well received as John is an excellent raconteur.

John and Doug then cut a very special birthday cake, which was enjoyed with a glass of wine.

Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in organising the event.

ANDERSON & GARLAND COLLECTION

We were invited to attend a viewing evening by this local auctioneers. Their generous customers donated £458, for which we are very grateful. Thanks go to Anne Havis for organising this event.

SPECIAL RECORDING

We recently produced a recording of the book North East Life in the 30s, 40s & 50s written by local historian Andrew Clark (published by Summerhill Books.) The feedback from listeners has been very positive and the recording seems to have revived many memories and created talking points from those days gone by.

Two songs on the recording: The Proggy Mat and The Aad Days have proved particularly popular. They were written and recorded by north east musician Trev Reed. On hearing the finished production Trev contacted us to say " Just received the cd of the show this morning. Thank you so much for that, it's excellent and a great use made of my songs. Can't thank you enough. Please pass my compliments to all who created the show. Wonderful."

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who assisted in making this recording such a success. Thanks to Andrew Clark and Trev Reed for permission to use their work and thanks to those listeners who gave us such lovely feedback.
